6 Useful Health Tips during the Monsoon


After the scorching heat of the summer everyone looks monsoon as a season for relief. It brings joyful and cool weather with long mornings and evenings. The sudden rains and drizzles bring joy in the hearts of people and makes everyone hanker for such weather.

However, this is not over yet! This is just one face of the coin. On the hind side rains keeps everyone on their feet by causing various health issues. Especially, children and the elderly are more prone to get affected by rains than any other age group. This is the season for the birth of new diseases and low immunity people will become vulnerable to the bacteria and virus that cause fever, cold and lot more other health issues.

There are various other triggering factors that cause serious illness such as malaria, typhoid and dengue. Rainy season becomes haven for the mosquitos and insects as this season provides perfect grounds for breeding in the forms of stagnant water and wet places. These very mosquitos cause number of serious health issues and illness. 

In addition cold weather causes breathing issues, increased joint pains for the arthritis patients and skin issues among the elderly. Sometimes it becomes more difficult for them to cope with the weather issues caused by the monsoon season. Here are few tips that could help seniors to get through monsoon without having the need to negotiate much! 

Hygienic and Healthy Diet – It’s not uncommon to see various insects all over the places during monsoon. The standards of health and hygiene gets knocked out during rains and it is very important to keep the surroundings clean. Also, the diet should be particular based on the health of the senior citizens. It should have more fibre quotient in the diet as constipation may occur during monsoon in some seniors.

     Keep Hydrated – Though it is a cold weather, it is important to keep oneself hydrated as the body works harder to keep warm and it involves in consuming lot of energy. Keep hydrated and apply a skin moisturizer in order to keep the skin from getting dried due to the excess heat from the body. It also helps senior citizens in better digestion.

 Mosquito Repellents and Nets – Ensure you are not exposed to mosquitos by using mosquito coils, repellents and nets. Mosquito bites can lead to serious health complications. Keep all the doors and windows shut before its evening.

Medications – If seniors or children are living at home, ensure the preventive and prescribed medication is available at home as getting medical attention during rains could be difficult. Consume fruits and vegetables especially fruits that are rich in Vitamin C like bananas, avocados, apples and peaches as they increase immunity.

Personal Hygiene – Take bath twice a day with warm and clean water. Body could become a haven for various bacteria during monsoon and it is important to clean especially after getting drenched in rain. Keep yourself dry and wear washed and dried clothes.

        Avoid Eating Outside – As the weather gets cooler it is common to see people crave for spicy and masala contented snacks that are available outside. However, it is advisable to avoid eating out as the hygiene will be compromised, especially during rains.    

Monsoon, indeed a season that makes one feel great with the showers of rain and cosy and breezy mornings. However, it is also the season that makes low immune and elderly people prone to get various health issues. Follow these tips to avoid the health issues and enjoy the monsoon season.
