Best Drinks Besides Water to Fuel Muscles in Summer

One of the vital aspects of healthy living is Hydration. It refers to the process in which water is continuously replenished in the body. Remaining hydrated is not a matter limited to quenching one’s thirst. It essentially refers to consuming sufficient fluids for the body to be healthy, energized and active throughout the day. Hydration is crucial as our body is filled mostly with water and a proper balance between water and electrolytes is needed. This really determines how most of the body systems including nerves and muscles are fueled to function efficiently. 


Summer heat poses several threats including dehydration, sunstroke and heat exhaustion. Sparkling water is one of the most popular drinks for hydration. But there are many delicious healthy beverages that serve as excellent alternatives. These hydrating drinks are rich in electrolytes like sodium and potassium, vitamin, probiotics and minerals and come in a variety of flavours. Let us explore them. 

Summer Drinks 

    • Lemon Water-This is one of the most popular drinks and can be consumed with a pinch of salt or can even be combined with honey to aid weight loss. It keeps the body well hydrated and acts as a rich source of Vitamin C. 

    • Cucumber Juice-Cucumber contain 90% water and amongst the most hydrating vegetables. Vegetable juices are better hydrating agents than fruit juices because the natural sugars present in the latter may inhibit hydration.  

    • Aloe Vera Juice- This super drink has high antioxidants and regenerative properties, the capability to detoxify the gut and provides beauty benefits for glowing skin. 

Sports Drinks 

Outdoor activities and sports are a great way for simultaneously having fun with fitness. However, there is a need to pay extra attention to hydration as the body perspires heavily and loses its salt content. To keep the muscles working and for avoiding fatigue, it is important to drink plenty of liquids before and after the physical activity. 

Usually, for most outdoor activities, water is sufficient. But when it lasts for an hour or more, either fruit juice diluted with water or certain sports drink provide carbohydrates for energy.  

Oral Rehydration Solution is an electrolyte replacement drink that keeps the body hydrated for four hours after exercising. They contain minerals to replace electrolytes (sodium, potassium,  magnesium) lost during perspiration. These drinks are designed to rapidly replace fluids and to increase glucose content being circulated in the blood. 

Coconut water, a tropical drink, is one of the best sources for hydration which is low in calories but rich in potassium. Unsweetened varieties of coconut water are good after light exercise. But it does not complete replenish the body salt content after rigorous exercise as it is low in sodium. 

 Health Drinks 

    • Herbal Teas-Various herbal teas are good health drinks. They are caffeine-free and contain natural ingredients that calm tired nerves and relax the mind.  

    • Green Tea is rich in flavonoids and polyphenols. It reduces the risk of osteoporosis, cancer, heart disease and tooth cavities. 

    • Mint Tea aids in digestion, relaxes muscles and eases cramps. 

   • Milk – Low-fat milk is more effective than water. Milk contains a natural blend of carbohydrates, proteins and sodium. It curbs food cravings and fights osteoporosis. Milk may be consumed directly or in form of milkshakes, smoothies or buttermilk. 

    • Soy Milk reduces the risk of heart disease. 

    • Hot Chocolate elevates mood and fights heart disease. 

    • Various Juices offer multiple benefits 

    • Orange Juice boosts immunity. 

    • Pomegranate Juice reduces inflammation and combats cancer. 

    • Beetroot juice increases stamina.
