Why are non- emergency ambulances essential for the elderly ?

For the elderly, health is the first priority and healthcare becomes the all-consuming need of the hour. To maintain good health, seniors often need to visit hospitals for their regular health check-ups, tests and scans, vaccination, etc. This requires the use of safe and convenient elderly medical transportation along with some minimal healthcare support. And this can be provided only by a non-emergencyambulance service.

A non-emergency ambulance service is used ideally for elderly medical transportation in normal situations where there is no emergency or risk to the elder's life. although it is not meant for emergency purposes, facilities in a non-emergency ambulance match those found in emergency ambulances as well.

But do we really need a non-emergency ambulance for transporting seniors to the hospital? Won't a cab, auto or any of our own transport vehicle do? Definitely not and here are the reasons.

Reasons why non-emergency ambulance services are an absolute must for the elderly?

Many of us think that it is easy to care for elders using a family caregiver or a home healthcare service provider. But that is not so. Even if you have a home healthcare service provider caring for the elder day and night,  situations may arise when the elder needs to be taken to the hospital. This may be for an X-ray, scan, or some minor clinical procedure. Then, there is no option but to call for a non-emergency ambulance service.

A non-emergency ambulance service is a must for elders due to the following reasons.

1.      Facilities in the non-emergency ambulance.
Elderly medical transportation is no joke. It is not easy to shift an ailing or infirm elder from the house to the hospital on your own. First of all, transporting the elder to the vehicle might need carrying the elder. These may require the use of a stretcher or a wheelchair. All these are available as essential facilities in the non-emergency ambulance only and not at home.

2.      Safety in shifting seniors
Carrying or shifting the elder to the vehicle also requires some skill and practice. If you try to carry the senior on your own, you might not able to withstand their body weight and might drop them, causing grievous injury.
The other risk in shifting the senior on your own lies in carrying them wrongly and thereby causing them pain and trauma. In a non-emergency ambulance service, trained attendants are available to transport the patient. This ambulance personnel are trained to carry the patient in the right position, causing minimum pain and discomfort. Such expertise is a must to ensure the medical transportation of the senior.

3.      Clinical support during travel
Transporting a senior in an ambulance is not an easy task. This can cause anxiety for the elder and the elder might need some clinical support. Ailing elders and bedridden seniors might have to be transported with care along with their IV- drips or catheters. All these require clinical supervision and care which can be provided only by trained nurses. A non-emergency ambulance service comes equipped with trained nursing staff and medical personnel to assist the elder during travel.

4.      Handling interim emergency during travel
Sometimes, even while transporting elders to a hospital for a regular check-up, an emergency might arise on the way, the senior could suffer from an anxiety attack, breathlessness, nausea, etc. Such an interim emergency may require instant clinical support to make it pass. This can be provided by the non-emergency ambulance service..
The non-emergency ambulance service is fitted with all necessary medical equipment like oxygen cylinder, suction pump, stretcher, and other life-saving equipment. All these facilities in the non-emergency ambulance service are critical in handling emergency situations for seniors during travel.
