Fighting Cancer with hope

Hope.

“What does hope mean to you?” This was the question I asked my colleagues recently. There were so many interesting and unique answers I received from them. I don’t have any hesitations in admitting all their wide spectrum of answers gave me a broader perspective on hope. However, it gave me an insight that hope lies in different things for different people. No matter what, every human being will cling to something as a hope to face the world when everything falls apart.

As Lung cancer month was observed in the month of November, and the discussion on hope urged me to write this blog. This blog is focused to bring about some hope to the people fighting cancer and their family. There are many famous personalities who fought cancer with hope and have set an example that anything can be faced in life.

 Yuvraj Singh:

 “Six sixes in an over.”

You know whom I’m talking about. His T-20 world cup accomplishment in the year 2007 can never be forgotten. Yuvraj Singh has undoubtedly inspired us not just through his accomplishment in his career, but also by fighting cancer hopefully. Everyone across India was shocked when Yuvraj Singh was diagnosed with Lung Cancer in the year 2011. Within a year, through his sheer willpower and confidence, he recovered from cancer and was included in the 15-member Indian Squad, for the 2012, ICC World T-20, held in the year 2012.

 Daniel Jacobs:

This two-time middleweight world boxing champion is also a cancer survivor. Not just inside the rings, but also in life this ‘Miracle Man’ has defeated cancer and has proved himself strong inside out. He was diagnosed with cancer in the year 2011. After 19 months of break from the sport due to cancer, he gave a blasting comeback. In his comeback, he maintained a 10-fight win streak inspiring everyone.

 Lance Armstrong:

In the year 1996, he was diagnosed with cancer. When the doctor said that his cure rate was between 65 and 85 percent, Lance Armstrong boldly replied, “Let's get started. Let's kill this stuff”. Six days after his surgery Armstrong held a press conference in which he told, “I will win, I intend to beat this disease, and further, I intend to ride again as a professional cyclist.” In the year, 1997, Lance Armstrong Foundation, later called Livestrong was established. The main motive of this cancer foundation was to support cancer awareness and research. After curing cancer, Lance Armstrong registered seven glorious victories in Tour de France.

 Andres Galarraga:

In the year 1999, this former baseball player was diagnosed with cancerous tumors in his back. But this did not deter him. When he was diagnosed with the presence of tumor cells, his baseball career and even his life were at risk. However, he fought cancer with hope and came out victoriously. In the year 2000, he again gave a noteworthy comeback.

 Mario Lemieux:

Mario Lemieux is considered the star in ice hockey of all time. In the year 1993, he was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma. After recovering from the illness, he went on to play eight seasons in National Hockey League.

The above-mentioned are a few athletes who proved to us that with hope anything can be defeated. However, there are many personalities or your friends or family members who would have fought cancer or other deadly diseases. If you are someone who is fighting cancer or know someone who is fighting cancer, then this is for you.

‘Nothing can deter you from seeking what you want. Hope, though this is a small word, the power hope can give you is immense. Confidence and willpower will take you where you want to be. This too shall pass”
