Arise awake and stop not until the goal is reached. (World Disability Persons Day)

Certain things make a person become a child, no matter what age they are. One such thing is catching butterflies. More often you would have sat in a garden doing nothing. Your attention will be grabbed by a fluttering butterfly. The child in you won’t resist catching it in your fingers. The moment you catch it you will start admiring its beauty. Butterflies are beautiful right?

But have you seen each stage of a butterfly’s metamorphosis? Egg, Larva, Pupil, Butterfly. If you contemplate whether the butterfly looks beautiful at each stage, the answer is, No! The eggs, larva, and pupil are not as beautiful as the final stage. But it fights against all the odds to come out beautifully as a butterfly. It’s the same with human beings too. Not everyone’s life will be pleasant. But with sheer willpower, confidence, and faith anyone can come out victoriously.

With World disability person day observed in December, I planned on writing this blog. And I couldn’t think of an apt and empowering title than Swami Vivekananda’s words.

Disabilities in the Elderly:

Disabilities start to crawl as one starts aging. But nothing can deter a person who sees life as a gift irrespective of the lemons thrown. According to research made by the World Health Organization, it was concluded that more than 46 percent of older persons have disabilities. Also, more than 250 million seniors experience moderate to severe disabilities. The accumulation of health risks like disease, chronic illness, and injury, accounts for the higher disability rates among the elderly.

Reasons for disabilities in the Elderly:

The reasons for disabilities in the elderly are attributed to improperly treated illnesses, mental health affectations such as depression, anxiety, loneliness, cognitive and physiological decline, smoking, unhealthy lifestyle, inappropriate diet and nutrition, fluctuating body weight, alcohol consumption, and poor social life. It has also been found that there is a gender difference between men and women when it comes to disabilities. Women have a higher risk of getting affected by disabilities when compared to men.

Arthritis in the Elderly:

Mobility is the most common disability when it comes to the elderly. Arthritis is considered one of the most common mobility faced by the elderly. It has been found that there are nearly 100 various forms of Arthritis. However, physiotherapy helps in strengthening the muscles surrounding an arthritis-affected joint. Physiotherapy helps in reducing pain and enhance function. In fact, physiotherapy, & exercises are prioritized to treat arthritis in the beginning stages rather than taking medications. Physiotherapy also helps to strengthen the muscles surrounding the joint.

The increase in physical disability with age might lead the elderly to acquire one or multiple diseases. These diseases comprise hypertension, cardiovascular disease, cancer, lung and respiratory diseases, diabetes, and stroke. It can happen vice versa too. Chronic disease can also lead to multiple disabilities. Then these disabilities should be treated.
